Dave Tofani's Reviews

An American Garden CD - Reviews

"Dave Tofani, one of New York's best and most in-demand session musicians, brings a wealth of talent and musical treasures together in this exceptional jazz offering. A master of the sax and various other wind instruments, Dave displays his compositional skills as well in "An American Garden", his second release. Featuring just about every possible jazz band configuration from a quintet to a big band, Dave has something original and wonderful to offer jazz fans of every preference. This release, dedicated to the members of "the greatest generation" (Americans who were raising families during WWII), isn't your typical jazz release. It's attention to musical form is respectful of traditional elements while it explores contemporary and classical expressions simultaneously. This innovative approach makes "An American Garden" stand out from others in its field and bring forth a fruit that has to be tasted to be truly appreciated. And with each tasting, this musical fruit seems to get sweeter and more full bodied, like a fine, vintage wine. For lovers of truly glorious jazz music, I highly recommend the exploration of "An American Garden".

"Dave's performance is needless-to-say perfect throughout with intricate arrangements and solos and is equally at home on soprano, tenor or alto sax or indeed the variety of clarinets and flutes he has featured...An album rich in tone, massive in production and easy on the ear. Dave Tofani is well known in the music industry having performed solo work with countless well-known musicians over the years. Here he has concocted a treat of his own compositions (his second album featuring his own work) with his lovely woodwind sound...Bright, precise, eloquent, supremely confident, at once joyful, flowing and energetic, this music has some very interesting contrasts in tone, texture and rhythm...An extremely professional and highly enjoyable album"
